Class and Combat Dev Blog #1

Adventures, Bosses, and Classes- the ABCs of AQW combat!

Over the course of the last few years, we’ve made many major feature changes and mechanics changes that have drastically both improved and changed gameplay. Because of this, and in an effort to better communicate with the community and be transparent, we’d like to start doing Dev Blog posts before major mechanics changes or class changes.

We’ll discuss the changes we plan to make (broadly), why we’re doing them, and ask for your feedback on them. Currently on the plate is class rebalancing for November.

Beginning now, with Dev Blog #1!

November 2021 almost closes us out on a major year of changes, gameplay modes, and major class availability shifts. So first, a year-in review of the major changes to date, and why.

Awe Enhancements Update

Awe Enhancements updated earlier this year brought a range of new build options that players could consider, and created new variety in how classes could be optimized. The purpose of this project was to introduce an element of player agency to the game, and make the awe enhancements a strong part of both progression and gameplay.

We’ve left the middle levels of the Awe Enhancements as member-only, to maintain a membership benefit that’s been in the game since the introduction of Awe Enhancements. However, in the future, we plan to expand on the Awe Enhancement system with other “enhancement perks,” which may be obtained through other means.

/Heromart Reopens Update

Later in the year, in July, we brought back all of the Heromart calendar classes, and made them available ingame through Heropoints or Adventure Coins. Additionally, we brought all of the older calendar classes up to more modern power standards, and gave them all unique roles in battles.

This is part of a larger, long running effort to bring back all unique classes and gameplay to the game, so that newer players aren’t missing out on the fun. 

However, in the process of updating the calendar classes, several of them have been brought beyond the power levels we’d intended for them. Because of this, we plan to redistribute their power a bit in the next few months, and mellow out their performance in certain areas while buffing their performance in others.

Potions Shop Update

Then, in August, we rolled an update to Alina’s Armory in /alchemyacademy that made potions more widely accessible to players. This update was largely focused on increasing the number of potential builds by giving players more accessible Potion Slot options, as well as a meaningful place for them to spend gold.

Prices of the potions were balanced to reflect gold income through popular and optimal spots, while prices of Dragon Runestones (and Arcane Quills) better reflect players who don’t have access to high level gold farming, and would instead choose to spend their time creating potions to save gold.

With this update, we intend for potions to be used in challenging gameplay, and sometimes normal gameplay, giving us more options in building challenge monsters as well. Challenge bosses are generally intended to be beatable without the use of potions, but they may give a great boost to those who want to invest their time and gold.

Challenge Bosses Return

In addition to the Potions Update, we began a series of challenge bosses in August that featured special skills, mechanics and rewards.. We have many plans to expand this system going forward, and are already expanding on the kinds of abilities we can give bosses, kinds of rewards we can give you, and the challenges we can provide to all the high level players out there.

This update is going to be a mainstay going forward, but we do NOT intend for it to replace the style of content we’ve developed up until now. We’ll likely be giving parallels of rewards to classic AQW style farming, and challenge boss rewards, so that players may choose how they play the game. Challenge boss content is intended to promote social activities, guild activities, and late-game progression, and will cover a range of levels, not just endgame only.

Up until now, we’ve been doing one challenge boss per month, and occasionally for major saga finales, but we’ll be looking to slow this down a bit as we go into 2022, since we’ll have created a wealth of daily and weekly content for players to play with their friends to clear. We hope you will continue giving us feedback, so that we may continue to create more fun and challenging content for everyone.

Server Updates and Client Updates

In addition to all of these, we’ve been steadily making server changes to fix bugs in gameplay and improve elements of gameplay, from fixing haste stacking and rebound-kill aura application, to improving disconnect mechanics and adding better stat interfaces for players.

The server updates have led to several classes becoming more or less powerful than they were originally intended to be, and we’d like to adjust them back to where they should be. Please understand that these changes bring the classes back to how they were, and are not isolated changes.

And now, moving on to proposed changes-

Upcoming Sweeping Class Updates

Finally, this brings us to the current and upcoming updates to discuss. In the coming few weeks, we’d like to do another wide sweep of late-game classes that are overperforming and underperforming and bring them closer to levels that make sense by progression. 

Firstly, the underperforming-

Dragon of Time is a class that’s fairly late-game and quite difficult to get. While we don’t intend for this class to be a replacement for endgame classes, it’s currently performing under the level that we’d like it at. Because of this, we’ll be looking at raising its direct damage output to raise its performance in farming. Soloing performance is not far off from where we intend, so we likely won’t give it any soloing-focused buffs.

Yami no Ronin is another late-game class that’s performing slightly under where we’d like it, and has a few description errors, such as Flash actually increasing damage taken by up to 100%, instead of 60%. Because we normally balance by performance, we’ll likely update the description, but we’d also like to give it a performance buff focused around its defensive play mode. So instead of leaving the damage taken at 100%, we’ll look at lowering the effects of Flash a bit, while increasing its passive skills, to increase its base performance.

Legion Revenant is an endgame class that’s scaled fairly poorly with the recent updates to features and mechanics, and is now performing under where we’d like it to be. Since farming is its primary role, we plan to make it shine more in that category, rather than being just a generalist class, so we plan to give its second ability AoE capability.

Then, the overperforming classes-

Chaos Slayer is an earlier late-game class that has grown disproportionally powerful with recent game engine updates, and feature updates. Because of this, we plan to lower its direct damage output in its AoE state, while giving a few quality of life features. We’d like to make Chaos Blight only accessible during its single target mode, as it's a DPS-focused mechanic on the class, but we’ll give it a weaker damage boost that will still be present in AoE mode. Additionally, we plan to make its heal activate 100% of the time, but it will be weaker in compensation. However, the final healing over time output will still be the same.

Void Highlord was recently heavily buffed and is currently overperforming past its intended mark, both due to the buff and to some server bug fixes. This is partially due to having new, longer fights in the game that were previously not present (and so were not heavily accounted for, as we were unsure of the direction they would take). Because of this, we plan to decrease the power of Abyssal Sacrifice. Additionally, we’ll make Abyssal Sacrifice affect all damage dealt to the enemy, not just physical.

Vampire Lord is a midgame to late-game class that grew extremely, disproportionately powerful with the recent game updates because of how the class operates. We don’t wish for this class to outperform other late and endgame classes, so we plan to adjust its power a little bit to compensate. Its base performance is actually not far off what we’d like, but its scaling with Awe Enhancements and potions are what we’d like to address. Because of this, we plan to raise its autoattack cooldown a bit.

Chrono Assassin is a midgame to late-game class that was strongly buffed by the haste stacking server fix, and now has max haste when it was not balanced to. Because of this, we plan to slow down the class just a little, back to where it was before the server changes, and fix several bugs in the class.

Chaos Avenger is an endgame class that was balanced around Void Highlord's current performance levels. Due to the fact that we're changing Void Highlord, we're looking at changing Chaos Avenger's overall damage output so that it is still proportional to Void Highlord's. Additionally, as many of you noticed, Chaos Avenger’s taunt was made non-loopable. We intend this as the first to a series of updates to various classes with taunt abilities, so that it can create more timing based mechanics, instead of spamming taunt skills. However, in doing so, the taunt on Chaos Avenger is currently on a skill that makes using it unwieldy. Because of this, we’ll be revisiting this change and resolving that issue - so you don’t feel like you’re losing out on damage in order to save your taunt.

In the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a look at taunts on various classes and adjusting them to provide a more interactive gameplay experience. We are looking to phase out loopable taunts as a whole, as they effectively remove the threat of any challenge monster with multi-target attacks.

AQWorlds Servers Back Online

We now return to your regularly scheduled adventures

The server issues affecting logins and stability have been fixed thanks to the combined efforts of Captain Rhubarb and Zhoom! You should be able to log in and battle uninterrupted again. Thank you for your patience! 

Yesterday's surprise 24 hour DOUBLE SERVER BOOST to Rep, Gold, XP, and Class Points has been extended through 12:01 AM EST tomorrow (October 28th) to help you get your farming back on track.

Wait, what happened?! O_O

Yesterday and the night before, we had been receiving ongoing reports of server issues. Captain Rhubarb worked tirelessly to track down the cause (related to some recent backend changes to optimize performance). 

The server hamsters were enrolled in an intensive boot camp to improve endurance and performance. I'm happy to say, they have passed with flying colors and are now rolling in their hamster balls faster than ever!

This Weekend: our 13th Birthday Origin Story Continues

Frostval Holiday Boss Design Contest

Design a Frostval Holiday Boss Monster Contest

For all of you artistic, creative, crazy monster hunters, beast masters, and mad scientists out there in the AQW community... this is your time to shine! Our "anything goes" AQWorlds Frostval holiday monster design contest begins now! We want to see your coolest creature creation, so grab a tablet, a drawing pad, or block of clay and get ready to rock. This contest will run until 11:59am (Noon) on Monday, November 1st. 

Prize Details

The winning entry will be created and released in AdventureQuest Worlds as a Frostval Holiday reward farming boss this year.

Grand Prize Winner/s from each category will get:

• Winning design created and released in-game
• 2,000 AC prize
• Free 2021 Frostval Collection Chest
• To choose a friend (or alt account) to also receive the free Frostval chest
• Character page badge

Official Rules

1. Artwork may be created using any medium: pen, pencil, Flash, crayon, chalk, etc.
2. Must be original. No Screenshots, no copy/paste, no stenciling or tracing.
3. Concept cannot be based on any existing monsters. This includes other games, tv shows, movies, anime, manga, comics, novels, other people’s concepts, your brother’s concept, and anything else not created by you.
4. You may only submit one monster.
5. Your submission must include the concept art (You can, but do not need to, suggest skills or animations)
6. Images entered must be in .jpg format.
7. All entries must be completed and uploaded by Monday, November 1st at 12:01 PM (noon) Eastern 
8. Images must be no larger than "1920 x 1080"
9. Not following the above rules will warrant immediate disqualification.
10. Ultra scary monsters are fine, just please keep your submissions family-friendly!

Artix Entertainment's Pumpkin Carving Contest: 2021 Edition!

Can you... SQUASH... the competition?!

… Ok, at this point maybe “Fall Food Decorating Contest” is more appropriate, but it just doesn’t have the same ring. BUT on to the contest! Do you have what it takes to carve the best AdventureQuest Worlds-themed pumpkin in all of Lore? How skilled are you in the fine arts of squash carnage? Are you able to duel-wield a camera and a carved ear of corn at the same time? If so, this contest is perfect for you!

Attention all ye who wish to enter…this contest: Mogloween is drawing ever near, so we need pumpkin-carving masters to take on this challenge!

To be considered, all entries must:

• Include your game character name and the year (2021) visually displayed somewhere within the picture or video

  • The game character name in the picture must be tied to an Artix account to receive a prize

• Must not use digitally altered art (so no photoshopping) - we want to see what you can do offline!

• Be themed on any Artix game, character, monster, etc

• Be posted to the AE_Contests Twitter account, AQW Facebook account

• The photo of your pumpkin must be of the highest quality—the bigger and more clear the picture, the better!

• One entry per person

You are welcome to think outside the box and submit other non-pumpkin creative entries for our consideration… but carved pumpkins and gourds are what we want to feature!  So you COULD...

• Paint a pumpkin

• Dress an ear of corn

• Carve a pumpkin pie

• Build a diorama featuring acorn squash

This Weekend: our 13th Birthday Origin Story Continues

Our 13th birthday story event continues this weekend with Queen of Chaos: Elemental Orb Hunt! Last week, your adventure began in /queensreign as you traveled back in time to help the 12 Heroes of Balance in their quest to bind the Queen of Monsters. This weekend, log in and help the original Ledgermayne, Tibicenas, Xing & Xang, and more as you quest to find the rest of the Elemental Orbs you'll need to seal away the Queen.

• Help Ledgermayne recover the Fire Orb
• Complete Tibicenas' quests to secure the Light Orb
• Fight through a frozen Mythsong to get the Ice Orb

Queen's Chaos Collection Chest Update

Unlock 150+ items in our 13th Birthday Collection

We're celebrating AQWorlds 13th birthday all month long, and this weekend, we're adding even MORE gear to our event rare collection chest! Find the event shop full of 13th Birthday rare items in Battleon now, and then return when we add in Friday night's update to find even MORE gear. If you're a collector or rare hunter, pick up the Queen's Chaos Collection Chest to get ALL of the event rares and a character page badge for 10,000 AdventureCoins (that is over 50,000 ACs worth of gear)! 

This week, the Fire, Darkness, Light, and Energy sets -- along with the Ancient Knight -- join all of the gear released last week.

Introducing... the Hero Guild PVP Community

A New Community Project for PVP Fans

Over the last couple of weeks, you may have seen tweets about PVP and getting your ideas, but also retweets of PVP tournaments hosted by a player group called The Hero Guild. This group of crazy talented players has crafted an awesome new set way for fans of AQWorlds' PVP to enjoy the battles, and the feedback from your fellow players who have gotten to try it have been overwhelmingly positive. That's why, we're excited to announce that the Hero PVP System is now an official AE Community Project!*

What is Hero PvP?

Hero PvP is a new Player versus Player system aimed at making PvP more fun, competitive, and rewarding. Check out the video trailer here!

Using Hero PVP:

• Matches are livestreamed, recorded and saved to the Hero PvP database
• Receive stats like kills/deaths/assists, DPS, and more after matches
• Global leaderboard tracker on the Hero PvP website 

The Hero Community hosts tournaments, raffles, and contests for PvP. Over 100,000 APs worth have been won already, and we've received 52 weeks worth of Artix Points gift codes from the team to add even more prizes. Heromart items are also up as prizes, and even more may be coming in the future.

Hero PvP is hosted out of the Hero PvP discord and website. **

How does Hero PvP work?

Most of you are familiar with the classic AQW PvP maps, like /bludrutbrawl, /chaosbrawl, and more. Recently, working with the Hero PVP team, Captain Rhubarb rolled out the /bludrutpvp map, centered strictly around player vs player combat.

• With Hero PVP, players engage in 1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 / or 4v4 battles with other players.
• Each team tries to be the first to 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 kills (team deathmatch style) 
• The added mechanic of changing rooms / communicating with your teammates makes for an action-packed, high skill game

A full set of rules, guidelines, and allowed classes are available on the Hero PvP discord, along with the rest of the matchmaking functions.

Don’t see your favorite classes? Don’t worry, the AQWorlds Class team has already begun working to create PvP-specific versions of classes!

PvP versions of classes?

We will be working to optimize and lightly rebalance many of the classes used in Hero PvP in the upcoming months. We’d like to involve all of YOU in this process as well, so you can find the newest class undergoing testing available for Legends ingame starting later this week! 

These rebalanced versions of classes will be separate from their normal versions, so we won’t affect progression in other parts of the game.  You can find the testing class in the PvP rewards shop in the game menu, and it will be constantly updated with the newest class that we’re tweaking. 

You can interact with other community members, our class testers, and the Hero PvP members in a special channel on the Artix Games discord, where you can give feedback and receive the latest updates for how the class is evolving. Simply join the Artix Games official discord and visit the #aqw-pvp-class-testing channel, and leave your feedback.

Hero PVP Features

• Match queue and private match builder through Discord
• Individual and team statistics report 
• Match livestream and replay post-match
• Comsumables and Awe use detection
• Live score updates on Discord
• Ranking system with tiers (Bronze III through Legend) and a global leaderboard
• Website where this ALL comes together: you can watch matches, even if you aren't playing them

Answering your questions!

After the above post was put out, we began receiving a lot of questions on Discord and other platforms... and I've got answers! The class team is creating several PVP-focused variants to help enhance the Hero PVP community's experience, but their main focus will continue to be on rebalancing existing classes and creating new one. 

The non-OP PVP community is a very specific, dedicated and passionate one, with a hardcore group of super-fans. Captain Rhubarb has made changes to assist the Hero PVP team's efforts (and in doing so, created functionality that will be useful elsewhere in the game!)

The vast majority of the team's time is still dedicated to the weekly releases + feature additions that will benefit all our players. We're helping promote the group because we appreciate the work they're putting in towards making the experience better for those who enjoy it.

Also exciting: our community managers -- Rellik and Taini -- have been working on new ways and methods to recognize and reward other community groups that are very active and helping their friends and followers enjoy Artix Entertainment's games and community! Stay tuned for more news on this in the near future.

New Weekly Challenge Boss: Champion Drakath

Battle Drakath One on One and Reap the Rewards

If you fought Drakath at the end of the Chaos Lord Saga, you know that you haven’t REALLY faced him. Not in a fair fight! This week, if you’ve finished the Lords of Chaos Saga, and are at least level 80, return to the Inn at the Edge of Time to face Drakath at his full power!

Champion Drakath can be defeated once a week* for 5 of his Insignias, which can be used to unlock new Chaos-themed items, as well as merge upgrades to existing ones!

• Parallel Chaos Amulet: Used to acquire the Chaos Avenger Class
• Empowered Drakath's Armor: Deals 50% more damage to Chaos monsters when equipped. 
  Requires level 80. 
• Empowered Original Drakath's Armor: Deals 50% more damage to Chaos monsters when equipped.
  Requires level 80. 
• Empowered Blade of Chaos: Deals 75% more damage to Chaos monsters when equipped.

Chaos Avenger Class Skills

A Chaos Amulet is Yours to Wield!AdventureQuest Worlds turns 13 this year, and our month of Chaos begins October 1st with a new challenge boss, [Champion] Drakath! Then, return on Friday, October 8th for our new class, Chaos Avenger!

How to Unlock the Class

What if Drakath's Chaos Amulet was yours to wield? Time to find out! To unlock the class, you'll have to defeat the Champion of Chaos himself and obtain his Insignias to earn a Chaos Amulet of your own. There is no Adventure Coin variant of the Chaos Avenger class.

Chaos Avenger Details

Recommended enhancement: Lucky. In one timeline, The Hero managed to defeat Drakath and get a hold of their Chaos Amulet. Instead of becoming the Slayer who tried to destroy Lore, The Hero ended up becoming the Avenger that saved it.

Mana Regen: The Chaos Avenger regains 50 mana when they strike a target with Chaos Greatsword.

Swing your Greatsword down on your target for massive damage. Applies a stack of Chaos Fury, increasing your Crit Chance and Crit Damage by 6% for 12 seconds, stacks to 15. Deals double damage to Branded targets.

The Chaos Avenger's weapon of choice is the greatsword! This auto attack is your main source of damage on this class. What is a Branded target you may ask? We'll get to that soon enough.

Max Targets: 1
Type: Physical
Range: Melee
Mana Cost: 50
Cooldown: 8 seconds

Impale your target with your Greatsword to drain life from them. Deals damage and chaorrupts your target's defenses, increasing the damage they take by 8% for 15 seconds, stacks to 5. 
One of your sources of healing on the class, with an added defense debuff to really leave an impact on your opponent!

Rank needed: 2
Target: Enemy
Max Targets: 1
Type: Physical
Range: InfiniteMana Cost: 50Cooldown: 8 seconds

Chaos manifests itself, dealing damage while randomly reducing your target's Dodge, Crit Chance, Hit Chance, Haste, and outgoing damage. Each debuff reduces its respective stat by 30% for 15 seconds. Can’t miss and always crits.

It wouldn't be Chaos without a bit of randomness. The activation chance for each debuff is as follows:

• Evasion Chaorrupted - (100% Chance) 
• Crit Chance Chaorrupted - (70% Chance) 
• Accuracy Chaorrupted - (50% Chance) 
• Damage Chaorrupted - (40% Chance) 
• Haste Chaorrupted - (30% Chance)

Chaos Bulwark
Rank needed: 3
Target: Enemy
Max Targets: 1
Type: Physical
Range: Melee
Mana Cost: 50
Cooldown: 8 seconds

Chaorrupt the raw energy around you and release a portion of it at your target, dealing damage while absorbing the remainder into your armor. Applies a stack of Chaotic Armor, reducing the damage you take by 30%, plus 5% for each additional stack (up to 55% total), and a stack of Chaotic Regeneration, which heals you over time and stacks to 5. Both effects last 15 seconds.

A very defense based skill. Not only does this skill contain your second source of healing, it also contains a hefty defense buff to yourself. The bulk of the buff is applied on the skill's initial use, but you'll have to use it a few more times if you want to get the full effect!

Fury Unleashed
Rank needed: 5
Target: Enemy
Max Targets: 1
Range: Infinite
Mana Cost: 50
Cooldown: 35 seconds

Deals damage and channels your fury into your greatsword, increasing your outgoing damage by 50%. Also increases your Haste by 5%, plus an additional 5% for each stack of Ravaged your target has (up to 45% total) for 15 seconds. 

The longer your battles last, the stronger the Haste buff on this skill becomes. A flat 50% increase to your outgoing damage isn't too bad to have either!

Passives:

Brand of Chaos
Rank needed: 4
Type: Passive

Starting at rank 1, all skills (except Chaos Greatsword) Brand your target. Whenever your Chaos Greatsword strikes a Branded target, the Brand is consumed to deal double damage to them and apply Ravaged, which stacks to 8 and is used for Fury Unleashed.

This is the passive that ties the class together. Each time you use a skill, your next auto attack will be empowered to deal DOUBLE the damage. The timing for doing this is quite forgiving, but there may be times where you'll have to decide on which skill to use next.

Unending Rage 
Rank needed: 4
Type: Passive

Strength increased by 50%, but INT reduced to 0.

Death Defiant
Rank needed: 10
Type: Passive
Physical Damage taken reduced by 35% and Endurance increased by 200%.

Conclusion

The Chaos Avenger has harnessed a power that only one other has wielded before it. With its powerful attacks, great survivability stats, and crippling debuffs, the class is able to take on the toughest of bosses. So unsheath your greatsword, and show your opponents the true power of Chaos!

Bonus: Chaos Avenger Member Preview From October 8th to October 22nd, members can purchase a preview version of the Chaos Avenger class from the Featured Gear shop!

Since the permanent version of the class will take a few weeks to obtain, we wanted to give you guys a way to try out the class ahead of time! The class skills on the preview version will change to Berserker's after the preview period ends.

October Seasonal Set: ChronoStriker

Every October, we celebrate the anniversary of AQWorlds' launch. This month, we're showcasing a set that pays homage to the origin of your hero... and their future. AQWorlds was created when Galanoth the DragonSlayer killed the Eternal Dragon of Time* and the 3 original timelines** merged. Unlock the full set and character page badge when you buy the full pack, or talk to Garek in Battleon to get individual set pieces.

October Set: ChronoStriker

The Eternal Dragon of Time rules over the past, present, and future. The ChronoStriker armor will enable you to strike at your enemies regardless of the timeline they inhabit. 

There are two ways to get the gear:

1) Total package: Buy the entire set directly through the website for $9.99 USD 

2) Individually: Buy each of the individual pieces from Garek the Traveling Gear Merchant in Battleon.

The total cost to buy all of the gear individually is 4,000 ACs, so getting all the gear from the ChronoStriker pack is a pretty sweet deal (you save 2,000 ACs).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the monthly upgrade bonus? 

Monthly upgrade bonus gear is an extra reward for buying AdventureCoin or Membership packages. Seasonal set packs are bought separately. Just like the Flame Dragon Warrior pack, you can buy the entire set directly, for one price, on our site. You can ALSO buy the individual pieces in-game.

This set will return EVERY October, so if you can't get it now, you'll have another chance in upcoming years.

What if I just want ONE of the items?

You're in luck! Talk to Garek in Battleon. He'll be selling the individual pieces of the set through October 31st.

Where do I get my gear if I buy the full set through the website?

You'll find it in your Book of Lore.
